Facial creases and wrinkles form in response to the repeated pull of facial muscles in a particular manner. Most people have a distinctive facial habit – grimacing, raising eyebrows, using one side of the face more than the other, etc – and so over time they will see a set of facial lines appear which reflect this individual habit.

Treatments using filler injections or skin peels can smooth over facial lines once they have already developed. The damage has already been done and will continue. Therefore, it would be preferable to treat the CAUSE rather than the EFFECT. The 'Hibernation Treatment' uses freezing injections to PREVENT skin creases from developing. This freezing is always temporary and never permanent, which is why it is called hibernation.

The primary aim of treatment is to break the habit of frowning and to re–educate the facial muscles so that the tendency to frown is lost. Usually patients have a number of these injections over a year or two until the frowning habit is broken.

For many, botulinum injections really is the ultimate cosmetic treatment. Not only does botulinum injections reduce or totally eliminate lines, leaving the patient looking 10–20 years younger within days. More importantly, by eliminating the cause of the lines i.e. the habitual, repetitive contractions of the muscles, it prevents them from coming back. In other words, if you have mild or moderate lines now, in 5 or10 years time those lines will be deep, possibly severe. However, by using botulinum injections those same lines will be less than they are today! This is why botulinum injections superceed any other wrinkle removal treatment and this is why Dr Dean never misses a treatment himself!

Freezing injections are given most effectively to the forehead frown area, which temporarily puts the frown muscles to sleep for 3 to 6 months. The injections take around 5 to 10 minutes. The Surgeon will ask you to frown hard so that your individual, exact pattern of forehead and frown movement becomes visible. The injections are very mild and in many cases unnoticeable.

Afterwards, you will have some tiny red marks for approximately one hour where the needle was inserted. The injection begins to take effect after 3 to 4 days and you may notice that it will become more difficult to frown. After 1 to 2 weeks the muscle will be completely asleep.
